THE END OF AN ERA
They say “all good things must come to an end.”
And that’s the story I’m going to share with you here in this mini-series. This is the bittersweet tale of the process of selling my Divorce House. If you’ve had one, then you know what I mean. It’s the New Beginning house you buy when a marriage ends. It’s the four walls that hold your hopes and dreams for your children, the opportunity to embrace your OWN design style while trying to make a nest for your kids who now must split their time between houses, managing their own grieving process. It’s the space where you lick your sorrowful heart and pray for a light at the end of the tunnel.
My little home was purchased in 2007 with the little bit of down-payment cash I could muster not dedicated to attorney’s fees. It had all the necessary bedrooms and a one-car garage that my car would theoretically fit into – as long as I didn’t try to open the doors. The original floor plan was three bedrooms, one bath, and zero closet space all wrapped into a little bit more than 1051 glorious sq ft of all mine! Never mind the fact I had never mowed a lawn in my life or shoveled snow, I was ready and eager to take on this space as my own little nest of happiness! I knocked down walls, closed up a pair of windows that looked out onto nothing, carved out extra efficient closet space in all the bedrooms, added an en suite bathroom and walkout deck off the primary bedroom. It was and still is a pretty awesome feat of space planning if I say so myself!
We celebrated birthdays, holidays and I even gave birth to my youngest (OPPS!) baby there in that home. It was a happy place for me, and I hope so for my girls! Eventually, I got remarried and my parents took over the house, and years later one of my daughters lived there. But now it’s time to let it go. It’s time to step fully and completely into my current life and leave that safety net behind. Again, if you’ve been divorced – you know what I mean.
So here we are. Packing up boxes full of memories. Deciding what renovations and polishes to make to my little home so it can be passed on to someone who will love it home as much as I (we) did!
I hope you’ll follow along for the journey and adventures in remodeling!
XO
