Have you thought about working with an upholsterer but not sure where or how to start?

This is the #1 question I am asked by designers - “Is it worth it?” Followed by “How do I make margin with this service?”

How to work with an Upholsterer
$149.00

Do you (and your clients) wonder if a piece is worth reupholstering? With supply chain issues, shipping conundrums, and long lead times, reupholstering an existing piece seems like the answer!

But where do you even start?

This is the most popular topic I’m asked about in my one-to-one upholstery project mentor sessions!

Designers wonder:

· How do I find an upholsterer in my area?

· How will I know if they are any good?

· Will the piece be completed the way I envisioned?

· What happens if it turns out bad?

· How do I build a good relationship with an upholsterer?

And the BIGGEST QUESTION

· Where’s the margin??

And my Super-Secret Sauce - printable Workroom Workorder Worksheet that can be customized for YOUR business

This is the CYA (COVER YOUR ASSets) Workorder that saved my upholstery business countless hours and thousands of dollars because all the project details are in one place, preventing both miscommunication and second guessing.

These are the details that you don’t typically fill out on a new upholstered piece Purchase Order. Things you would probably never think about…until it’s too late.

Ever had the wrong fabric put on a frame when you’re working on multiple projects? Or the wrong stain finish? Or the wrong…whatever? - Who paid for that mistake?

Ever started on a reupholstery project only to find out halfway in that it didn’t make sense to finish? - How do you address the cost of labor spent and fabric that can’t be returned or reused?

Who ARE you? Why should I listen to you?

Hi, I’m Richelle a practicing interior designer in the Kansas City area. I previously owned an upholstery studio that specialized in restoring vintage seating from the bare frame up! This program is the result of years of workroom management.

With multiple projects going on at once, different clients all needing individualized attention, and different client fabrics arriving daily, I needed to have all the answers at my fingertips for the entire team to know what was expected. Having these answers allowed me to reduce stall time waiting for a client to get back with an answer about a detail - that means quicker turnaround for everyone!

As a workroom, going over the CYA Workorder line by line ensured that the piece would look exactly as the client envisioned (i.e. striped welt on the bias may not be the look you expected)

But most importantly? Taking the time to go over each potential hiccup opened communication and reduced costly errors!

Lastly - don’t most workrooms have this already?

You would think so…but they don’t, and I don’t know why. In fact, I offer this workorder to professional workrooms to help with their clients.

I hope you’ll join in!
